Embark on an Epic Journey: From the Bering Strait to the Birth of a Nation
This immersive U.S. history course invites students to traverse the rich tapestry of America’s past, from the initial crossing of the Bering Strait to the Revolutionary War and the founding of a new nation. What sets this class apart is its unique blend of interactive role-playing adventures and project-based learning, designed to bring history to life in a dynamic and engaging way.
Interactive Historical Adventures Drawing inspiration from role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons—sans magic and with strict adherence to historical accuracy—students will assume the roles of historical figures and everyday individuals from various eras. Each week, they will face challenges and make decisions that mirror the complexities of the times, fostering a deep, personal connection to historical events. This method aligns with the Reacting to the Past pedagogy, which emphasizes active learning through role immersion.
Expedition-Based Learning Mirroring the exploratory spirit of games like Oregon Trail, students will embark on simulated journeys that reflect the experiences of early explorers, settlers, and revolutionaries. They will plan routes, manage resources, and confront the unforeseen obstacles that historical figures once faced, thereby gaining a practical understanding of the challenges and triumphs that shaped the nation.
Codebreaking and Espionage to delve into the clandestine world of American spy rings, students will engage in activities that involve deciphering codes and uncovering hidden messages. They will study the techniques used by spies during the Revolutionary War, such as the Culper Ring, and apply this knowledge to solve mysteries within the course, enhancing their analytical and critical thinking skills.
Project-Based Learning Emphasizing project-based learning, the course encourages students to collaborate on projects that require research, creativity, and problem-solving. For example, they might design a mock trial to debate the merits of independence, create detailed maps charting migration patterns, or develop multimedia presentations on pivotal events. This approach not only deepens content knowledge but also fosters essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and self-direction.
